Any website can give you a number out of 36. What a family actually needs is someone who can tell them what that number means, and whether it should change their decision.

What is kundali milan?

Kundali milan, or Ashtakoot Guna Milan, compares two birth charts across eight categories called kootas and scores them out of 36 points in total. A score of 18 or above is traditionally considered acceptable. At Sharma Rishte the milan is performed by Pandit Sahil Sharma, who also checks Manglik, Nadi and Bhakoot dosh and their cancellations before giving an opinion.

Reading the result

A score is a starting point, never a verdict

Sharma Ji has advised families to go ahead at 19 gunas and to think much harder at 28. The total tells you how many boxes matched — not which ones, and not whether a dosh stands cancelled in that particular pair of charts.

Which kootas failed?

The most useful question you can ask. Losing Varna and Vashya costs 3 points; losing Nadi costs 8.

Does a cancellation apply?

Nadi and Bhakoot dosh both have well-recognised exceptions. They must be checked against the actual charts.

What does it mean in daily life?

A failed Gana koota is a temperament question. A failed Bhakoot is a family-and-money question. They are not the same problem.

Workable. Doshas, if any, are checked and remedies discussed.
25 – 32 gunas — Very good
A strong match on most kootas — the usual comfortable range.
33 – 36 gunas — Excellent
Rare. Almost every koota aligns.

A score is a starting point, never the whole answer. Sharma Ji also reads Manglik dosh, Nadi and Bhakoot exceptions, and the dasha periods of both charts before advising a family either way.

What families ask about matching

How many gunas out of 36 are needed for marriage?

Traditionally 18 out of 36 gunas is the minimum for a match to be considered. 18 to 24 is treated as acceptable, 25 to 32 as very good, and 33 to 36 as excellent and quite rare. A score below 18 is normally not taken forward without a specific reason. However, the total alone is not the full picture — Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik positions are read separately.

What is Nadi dosh and does it stop a marriage?

Nadi dosh occurs when both charts fall in the same Nadi — Aadi, Madhya or Antya — and it costs all 8 points of the highest-weighted koota. Classical texts link it to the health of the couple and their children, which is why it is taken seriously. It is not always final: Nadi dosh is considered cancelled in several standard situations, such as when the bride and groom share the same rashi but different nakshatras. A pandit reads the specific charts before deciding.

What does it mean to be Manglik?

A person is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. The traditional concern is friction in married life. In practice a Manglik chart is usually matched with another Manglik chart, and several standard cancellations apply depending on the sign Mars occupies and its aspects. It is far more common than most families assume.

Can a marriage work if the guna score is low?

Yes, and many do. A low score tells you where the friction is likely to be, not that the marriage is doomed. Sharma Ji's practice is to explain which kootas failed and what that means in daily life, so the family decides with clear information rather than only a number.

What if we do not know the exact birth time?

Guna milan is based on the moon's nakshatra, which moves relatively slowly, so an approximate time often still allows a usable match. For detailed dosh and dasha analysis the exact time matters more. Tell Sharma Ji what you know — approximate time of day, or the event nearest the birth — and he will tell you what can and cannot be read reliably.
