Manglik Dosh: What It Is, What It Isn't, and How It Is Cancelled
Being told a daughter is Manglik causes more panic than almost any other line in a kundali. Most of that panic is unnecessary.
The short answer
Manglik dosh (also called Mangal dosh or Kuja dosh) occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart. It is traditionally associated with friction in married life. It is common, its severity varies with the sign Mars occupies, and it has several recognised cancellations — including when both partners are Manglik.
Few words in a kundali reading cause as much worry as Manglik. Families hear it and immediately assume the search has just become twice as hard. In practice it is one of the most common placements in Vedic astrology, and one of the most frequently over-stated.
What causes Manglik dosh
A chart is called Manglik when Mars (Mangal) occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Each of those houses touches marriage or domestic life in some way, and Mars is a planet of heat, drive and confrontation. The traditional concern is that this energy lands on the marriage itself.

Severity is not uniform
Two people can both be Manglik and be in completely different situations. What changes the reading:
- The sign Mars occupies. Mars in its own signs (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn behaves very differently from Mars in a difficult sign.
- Whether Mars is aspected by benefics. Jupiter's aspect in particular softens the placement considerably.
- Which reference point is used. Some traditions count from the Lagna, some from the Moon, some from Venus. A chart may be Manglik from one and not another — this is why two pandits sometimes give different answers.
- Age. Several classical texts hold that the effect reduces significantly after the age of 28.
The standard cancellations
Manglik dosh is considered cancelled — Manglik dosh bhang — in a number of well-recognised situations. The most common:
- Both partners are Manglik. This is the most widely accepted cancellation, and the reason Manglik profiles are routinely matched with one another.
- Mars is in its own sign or exalted in the concerned house.
- Mars is aspected by or conjunct Jupiter, or conjunct a benefic planet.
- Mars is in the 7th house but the sign is Cancer or Capricorn.
- Saturn aspects the Manglik house, which restrains the placement.
Remedies that are commonly advised
Where a dosh is genuinely present and uncancelled, traditional remedies include Mangal shanti puja, fasting on Tuesdays, the recitation of Hanuman Chalisa or Mangal mantras, and in some traditions the Kumbh Vivah ceremony before the marriage. Whether any of these are appropriate depends entirely on the chart — they are not a checklist to be applied blindly.
A practical note for families
In the Kangra valley, roughly speaking, a large minority of charts show some Manglik placement. Treating it as disqualifying would rule out a very large number of otherwise excellent matches. What matters is that the person reading the chart tells you honestly whether the dosh is strong, weak, or cancelled — and that they are willing to explain their reasoning.
