Nadi Dosh and Bhakoot Dosh: Why Pandits Take These Two Seriously
Between them, Nadi and Bhakoot account for 15 of the 36 gunas. Fail both and no match can cross the threshold — which is why their exceptions matter so much.
The short answer
Nadi dosh occurs when the bride and groom share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya) and costs all 8 of its gunas; it is traditionally linked to the health of the couple and their children. Bhakoot dosh occurs when the two Moon signs fall in a 6/8, 9/5 or 12/2 relationship and costs 7 gunas; it is linked to family welfare and prosperity. Both have recognised cancellations that must be checked before a match is rejected.
If a family tells me their guna score came out at 16 or 17, the first thing I check is whether Nadi or Bhakoot has failed. Between them these two kootas carry 15 of the 36 points. Fail both and the total mathematically cannot reach 18, no matter how well everything else matched.
Nadi dosh — 8 points
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three Nadis: Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha). The rule is straightforward — the bride and groom should not fall in the same Nadi. If they do, all 8 points are lost and the match is said to carry Nadi dosh.

The classical concern is the health of the couple and of their children. In modern terms, families often describe it as a constitutional similarity that is thought to be undesirable in a marriage.
When Nadi dosh is considered cancelled
- The bride and groom share the same rashi (Moon sign) but have different nakshatras.
- They share the same nakshatra but fall in different padas (quarters).
- The lords of the two nakshatras are the same planet.
- Certain combinations where the nakshatra lords are strongly friendly are also treated as cancelling in some traditions.
Bhakoot dosh — 7 points
Bhakoot compares the two Moon signs and counts the distance between them in both directions. Three relationships score zero:

When Bhakoot dosh is considered cancelled
- The lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet — for example Aries and Scorpio, both ruled by Mars.
- The lords of the two Moon signs are mutual friends.
- Graha Maitri (the 5-point koota) has scored full marks, which is treated as compensating.
- Both charts show the same navamsa lord in some traditions.
What families should do with this
- Ask specifically whether Nadi or Bhakoot has failed, rather than accepting the total alone.
- If either has failed, ask whether a cancellation applies — and which one.
- If no cancellation applies, ask what the pandit's honest recommendation is, and why.
- Do not reject or accept a proposal on the basis of an automated score printed from a website.
